Website Design

A business website is an essential tool for promoting and marketing your company.

Website Design Overview

An important tool for any business now is a website. In this day and age an online presence is almost mandatory for your business. But you shouldn’t think of this as just another expense that needs to be covered. A well thought out website can be one of your businesses greatest assets.

So if you are asking the question “Do I really need a website?” the answer quite simply is “Yes, yes you do”.

A common misconception is that for a business to need a website it must be an online retailer. This is not true and any business can benefit from a well built website.

Let’s imagine that your business is a Butcher’s Shop and that you are one of three in your local area. Your area is famous for its regional sausages and people travel from around the country to sample their delights. Visitors not knowing the area search the internet for local butchers stocking these sausages. Your competitors have websites, you do not. In this scenario the visitors would most likely choose the competition for their purchase.

While I understand that this is a hypothetical situation and wouldn’t apply to all businesses, it is nonetheless one of many different situations where the lack of an online presence can actually hinder your business.

What Do You Want Your Website To Do?

This question covers many different business types. The layout of your website will be dictated by what you want it to achieve. For example if you own a shop that sells beauty products, you can use your website to detail and promote your range.

Is Your Business Online Only?

Is your business going to sell items, but only online. Many small online retailers opt to use the marketplace of existing websites such as Amazon & eBay to generate sales. These are an extremely effective method and you can run a successful e-commerce company solely selling on these platforms

Are You Providing Information?

Is your business an online journal, blog or news outlet? Your website would need to have legibility at the forefront, be easy to add stories to and would most likely benefit from a comments or discussion section.

Benefits

A well thought out, properly designed website can be one of your businesses most effective tools for promoting your brand, market research, sales campaigns and reaching a wider customer base.

So what decisions do you need to make when creating your business website. Firstly, you need to think about what you want your website to do for you. Do you want to use it to sell your products or promote your services? Is your business based around an online only service? Or are you conveying information to a readership?

All these aspects are important and will shape the direction of your website so we’ll go through each one in detail.

Do you want to use it to sell your products or promote your services?

This question covers many different business types. The layout of your website will be dictated by what you want it to achieve. For example if you own a shop that sells beauty products, you can use your website to detail and promote your range. At this point you could stop and have the website be used solely to provide information on your products and be a very powerful advertising tool.

But each of those visitors could potentially be buying customers. Adding the ability for items to be purchased from your website could give you additional sales and increase your target market beyond your local area.

The same applies for service based businesses. If you are flexible and willing to travel outside your local area for customers, then a website will be an effective tool for national advertising and expanding your client base.

Is your business based around an online only service?

Is your business going to sell items, but only online. Many small online retailers opt to use the marketplace of existing websites such as Amazon & eBay to generate sales. These are an extremely effective method and you can run a successful e-commerce company solely selling on these platforms.
To build your own loyal customer base however, you would need to invest in your own e-commerce website.

With an online retail or e-commerce business you would need a substantial size website. Your website will need to fully detail every aspect of your products to gain interest. The website itself will need to have a polished clean look that’s easy to navigate to instill confidence in your target consumers. You will also require the ability to easily update and amend your pages, based around sales & stock levels.

If your business is providing a service such as a social media platform, online only software or a comparison website, then functionality is paramount. Your site will need to be clear, fast, easy to register with and secure. Your website would need to be engaging and provide a minimum level of service and features expected of by your users. Early market research would assist in making sure that your website included the necessary functionality.

Or are you conveying information to a readership?

Is your business an online journal, blog or news outlet? Your website would need to have legibility at the forefront, be easy to add stories to and would most likely benefit from a comments or discussion section.

In every different type of business there is always at least one way in which it could benefit from having its own business website.

Building Your Website

Now that you have thought about what your website is going to be used for, it’s time to get it built. There are a huge number of options when it comes to building a website. However where you go from here is very much dependent on your early planning as mentioned above.
There are a number of different template services that can be used, such as 1&1, WordPress or Squarespace. If you have a business that requires a simple website consisting of home, our services or products, about us & contact us pages, one of these template services would be a good choice.

They provide a template layout and you simply enter the text & images into the areas you want them to go. These templates are relatively easy to use, so the majority of business owners, with a little research and time could build their own websites using their services.
This could be beneficial if you are a very small business with minimal start-up capital and it will reduce the initial expense. Or if you are creating a blog or online journal, as your day to day running of the business would be based on what goes on your website, having that early experience and familiarity with its build would be helpful.

For all other businesses its most likely that you website will need some form of functionality that is beyond the scope of what these companies offer at a basic level. Whether this be a secure payment & shopping cart system, built in software, download links or a detailed commenting / client interaction section a web design company would be a better option.

You will need to have a discussion with the web design company around you website build. You will need to specify what you want the website to do for you, if you have any preference on look or feel, what functionality it must have and the time you are looking to have it launched.
In return the company you choose should be able to offer recommended hosting for your website, design expertise and secure functionality.
Some companies will offer ongoing support after the build and free amendments to the website at first.

Things to check

If you decide to go with a website design company to build your website there are somethings that will be beneficial for you to know before have your discussion.

Firstly you want them to build a “Responsive” website. A responsive website or flexible layout as it is sometimes referred is absolutely mandatory, if the company is not offering this as standard move on. A responsive website basically means that your website will respond to whatever device it is being viewed on, whether that is a PC, Laptop or Phone. Mobile devices account for half of the worlds online traffic, so your website needs to be viewable on all devices.

If the design company is arranging your hosting then you need to discuss your bandwidth and available storage. Ok so this is a little on the technical side but is something that needs to be discussed. The bandwidth at a very basic level determines how much data can be transferred or downloaded from a website.
If you ran a successful advertising campaign lets say, that increases use of your website you need to ensure that it can cope with the additional traffic. If your web design company has not anticipated the required bandwidth then a larger number of people using your website could cause it to slow down & in extreme cases go offline completely.
Most web companies will have produced enough sites for this to not be an issue but it’s still worth the discussion.

Make sure you are clear on the cost of the project and if any additional charges are applied for revisions or updates to the website build. If you set yourself a budget for your website you want to try to keep within this and as your site comes together you may have aspects of it that need changing. You don’t want to be unprepared for a surprise price increase based on your requested amendments.
