As people are starting to become more and more reliant on using this tool as a form of navigation in the modern world, its potential as a marketing tool is incredible.

So if you have a business Google Maps is something you must use to promote your business and help customers find you. Here are some pointers to help you make Google Maps work for your business.

What Is Google Maps Marketing?

Google maps marketing is the process of using the functionality of Google Maps to make your business easier for customers to find.

Google My Business (GMB)

How Long Does It Take To See Results?

You will need to be patient, with all of this in place it does take time for the results to start to show, but it is worth the effort. Keep on top of this aspect of your business and Google Maps will work wonders for your trade.

Google Maps Marketing

Google maps marketing is the process of using the functionality of Google Maps to make your business easier for customers to find.
So the ideal objective of google maps marketing is to get your business to appear as high up on the rankings as possible. These rankings are based on a series of different criteria.

Where To Start

Firstly proximity based results. These are the results based on your gps location. So if you have ever been out and thought about finding somewhere to eat, you may have very well done a search on your mobile device for “Restaurants near me”.
This will bring back a number of results on your device. At the top there will be a map of your current location and then three businesses in the area marked on it as A, B & C
A is the closest to you geographically and the other two are also in the vicinity and are placed as alternative options.
Having your business on google maps for the walk in trade is invaluable and a great way to increase customer footfall.

What’s Next?

The other way your business is listed on Google Map is for the area. So you can be listed on Google maps when someone is looking at an area without a GPS enabled device.
These results show a list of businesses of a certain type in any given location and is not restricted to three.

This will display a list of all of the business types in an area. Each will be shown on the map as a dot then on the left side of the map will be a list of business information, name, website, contact information etc.

This list is ranked and is not based on your current location, this is where you will need to have an effective marketing strategy in place for Google Maps in order to get yourself as close to the top of the list as possible, if not at the top.

Google My Business

The way to get yourself up this listing is to optimise your company on Google My Business. What’s that? Well if you have every search in Google for a business by name you may have seen a panel on the right of the results or at the top if viewed on mobile detailing the business.

This will include information on location, contact details, opening times, customer reviews, photos, and so on.

Setting Up GMB

So here is what you need to make sure you’ve got set up correctly on your Google My Business panel.
Your address, when you put the address for your business in, this needs to be your exact postal address used by the mail service. Having your address as specific as possible is only beneficial, you will also have a checkbox for making your address publicly viewable. Except for in a few circumstances where customer safety or privacy is at risk, your address should always be viewable.

Additional Measures To Implement

State which areas you cover. If you have a store but also offer a delivery service then you probably service much further than your immediate location. This needs to be stated on your business information. But also state if you don’t cover the location your are based at. If you have a head office you don’t want customers turning up at that address to buy an item if you hold stock at another location.

Verify your listing with Google verification process. This can take a couple of weeks. Google will send you a letter in the post that contains a number code, upon receipt of your letter you need to go onto your Google profile and enter the code. This will give confirmation of the address, and that you are either at or have physical access to this address.

Add as many categories to your listing that are relevant to your business. If you are a car retailer, don’t just select car retail and move on. It is mostly likely that you will offer additional services, such as repairs, upgrades, valeting, and accessory sales. Adding as many of these categories to your listing is only of benefit to you.

Add an introductory paragraph. This is your opportunity to communicate who you are, what you offer and why to choose you, to your potential customers. Don’t go overboard here, you want something that is clear and concise and will get this information over to your customers. If it’s too long people won’t read it, if it’s too short they may think your not what they are looking for.
This is a fine balance to try and achieve.

Along with this you need to add photos. Don’t just add any random pictures, think about the photos you want to put on your listing. What do you want them to do for you? A picture of your premises or store front should be mandatory, especially if you are a shop. Seeing what they are looking for will help customers to find you more easily.

Lastly customer reviews. You want to try to get customers to add reviews and opinions of your business onto your listing. These will not display until you have gain at least five, but once you have them they are another useful addition to your listing to push you up the rankings and make your business more appealing.

You will need to be patient, with all of this in place it does take time for the results to start to show, but it is worth the effort. Keep on top of this aspect of your business and Google Maps will work wonders for your trade.
